Boy Scouts of America: Astronomy Merit Badge Program
Schedule of requirements:
- August 21st - NCKAS Astronomy session at Warner Park, Manhattan. The event
starts at 8:45 PM. This session we can establish the merit badge group and start
to cover some of the information for BSA Merit Badge Requirements.
- Week of Aug. 22nd - Sept. 4th. Do Requirement 7. Use Requirement
7 Worksheet.
- December and January 2004 - Requirement #1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 are
assigned to be completed by January 31st 2005. Here are the specifics for each requirement:
- #1 - Email me your complete and final answer. Your answer will need to address every issue in this requirement. You can find safety issues for observing the sun at the Night Sky link on the web page I have provided above. Some of the requirement question is common sense and proper scouting precautions. If you have a question, please don't hesitate to email me to ask.
- #2 - Email me your complete and final answer. You are free and encouraged to use the links I have provided on the website above. Useful ones would be the International Dark Sky Association and Sky and Telescope. If you have a question, please don't hesitate to email me to ask. If you have other resources, please use those too.
- #3 - NCKAS will be having two viewing sessions this month on Dec. 4th and Dec. 18th. If you would like first hand demonstration of binoculars and telescopes please try to attend one or both of the events. January sessions will be posted
soon. You can find the specifies for the events at the www.nckas.org web site. You are free and encouraged to use the links I have provided on the website above. Useful ones would be the Telescope Basics and The Night Sky plus the Sky and Telescope link. When your have completed your investigation, email me your complete and final answer. If you have a question, please don't hesitate to email me to ask. If you have other resources, please use those too.
- #4 - Again, NCKAS will be having two viewing sessions this month on Dec. 4th and Dec. 18th. If you would like first hand demonstration of constellations and stars as well as the Big Dipper, please try to attend one or both of the events. January sessions will be posted soon. You can find the
specifies for the events at the www.nckas.org web site. You are free and encouraged to use the links I have provided on the website above. A great link would be the Sky and Telescope Interactive Sky Chart. When your have completed your investigation and are ready to
identify 10 constellations and eight stars, just let me know when you want to meet. This requirement is going to take a little bit of coordination. You are encouraged to work together and you can contact me if you wish to have more help with the identification. I am out most any clear evening. You can sketch the Big Dipper or print up from the Sky and Telescope Interactive Sky Chart link which ever you prefer. If you have a question, please don't hesitate to email me to ask. - #7 - Please hand in your sketches you made of the moon for this requirement to
Mrs. Tuttle at Amanda Arnold. If you need to finish up on this or want to redo it, you have until January 31st. If you have a question, please don't hesitate to email me to ask. If you have other resources, please use those too.

- #9 - You can choose whichever you want and we can make it happen. NCKAS will be having two public viewing sessions this month on Dec. 4th and Dec. 18th. January sessions will be posted soon or if you want any of the other options, just let me know.
